Shopify Product Schema Guide for Higher CTR!
Adding product schema to your Shopify store is one of the highest ROI activities for improving your rankings and click-through rates you can do. And by importance, it can be considered as essential as optimizing Shopify home page for SEO.
At GoldenWeb, it’s one of the first things we do for every single client we onboard, just because it’s so effective and always delivers results.
Best of all, it takes just 5-10 minutes to implement.
With that said, today we’ll cover what is product schema, why you should be using it on your Shopify store(or a Shopify Plus store), how to add it, and what to expect after implementing it.
What Is Shopify Product Schema
Shopify product schema is a piece of code that gets added to your product.liquid template inside of your Shopify theme settings.
This piece of code then allows Google to understand and crawl your product reviews, and display them in organic search results, under your meta description.
What Are The Benefits Of Shopify Product Schema
The main benefit of adding Shopify product schema is the increase in click-through rates from organic search.
If we compare two search results, both for the same product & keyword, but with the first product without product schema (stars under the meta description) and the second product with product schema applied…
Which one would you click on?
The product page with no stars, or the product page with stars and dozens of positive reviews?
Obviously, you’d go for the page with positive customer feedback.
But the benefits of Shopify product schema don’t end there…
Due to the newly added stars under your product pages or product variants, your organic click-through rates will go up, and with higher click-through rates, Google will consider your page more relevant than your competitors and thus give you an additional boost in the rankings.
How to Check if Shopify Product Schema is Already Enabled
If you’re unsure whether or not your product schema is enabled, you can do a quick Google search and check for yourself.
- Find a product page on your Shopify store that has customer reviews on it,
- Enter “site:(insert URL of the product page with reviews here)
- Click on search and see if there are stars/reviews displayed under the meta description.
How To Implement Shopify Product Schema (if you’re using a reviews app)
If you’re using a Shopify SEO app to collect product reviews like Okendo, Stamped, Loox, Judge.me, Reviews.io or other review apps that support product schema out of the box, this is going to be super easy.
All you have to do is simply reach out to their support team, and ask them to enable product schema for your story.
Most apps are usually very responsive, so they should have this done in no time.
How To Implement Shopify Product Schema (if you’re not using a reviews app)
It is easier than you think to add Google Product Schema on a Shopify product page, just follow below 3 steps:
1. Copy below code:
[code]
<script type=’application/ld+json’>
{
“@context”: “http://schema.org/”,
“@type”: “Product”,
“name”: “{{ product.title }}”,
“url”: “{{ shop.url }}{{ product.url }}”,
“image”: “{{ shop.url }}{{ product.featured_image }}”,
“description”: “{{ page_description }}”,
“offers”: {
“@type”: “Offer”,
“priceCurrency”: “{{ shop.currency }}”,
“price”: “{{ product.price | money_without_currency }}”,
“itemCondition”: “http://schema.org/NewCondition”,
“availability”: “http://schema.org/InStock”
}
}
</script>
[/code]
2. Go to online store -> themes -> Edit your theme
3. Go to the snippets folder under your theme code and create a new snippet call it "product-schema"
4. Paste the code you copied in step 1 into the new "product-schema.liquid"
5. Go to Product.liquid file, scroll to the very end of the page and past this code: {% include ‘product-schema’ %}
How to Verify Product Schema in Shopify is Working
After implementing the product schema we’d recommend waiting about a day and then running a test using Google’s Rich Snippet Testing Tool.
Here’s how to verify product schema in Shopify is working:
- Open Google’s Rich Snippet Testing Tool,
- Find a product page on your Shopify store that has reviews & copy its URL,
- Enter the URL into the Rich Snippet Testing Tool,
- If you see a valid “Review Snippet” detected, it means it’s working.
What to Expect After Implementing Shopify Product Schema
After implementing product schema or a product tag to your Shopify store, it’s going to take anywhere from 3-7 days for Google to properly recrawl all your product pages or the collection pages and start displaying review stars under your search results.
Shortly after that, you should start noticing an increase in click-through rates, followed by an increase in rankings as well.
