How to Migrate WordPress Blog to Shopify WITHOUT Losing SEO Traffic!

You have a successful WordPress blog. It's well-visited, popular, and helps contribute to your business or personal brand. But recently, you launched an online store. You don't want to start another blog within your store, but rather, you'd like to transition your already-existing WordPress blog to a Shopify site.

Fortunately, you don't need to start from scratch and manually transfer all of your content over. With the right strategy and techniques, you can easily migrate your WordPress blog over to Shopify in no time and keep your SEO rankings.

Should You Migrate Your Large WordPress Blog to Shopify?

For any experienced blogger, starting a blog from scratch is a time-consuming task. That's why many prefer to keep their existing WordPress blog and integrate it with Shopify instead of creating two separate websites.

However, if you have the time and resources to start a new blog on Shopify, then go ahead. This will give you more control over the design and navigation of your blog, as well as being able to integrate it properly with your store.

But here is the thing...

We don't recommend abandoning the WordPress blog you have worked too hard to create. Migrating your WordPress blog over to Shopify can be a great way to get the best of both worlds, as long as you follow the right migrations steps and work with us to mitigate the potential risks.

Benefits of Using Shopify's Blogging Feature

There are many benefits to using Shopify's blogging feature. They include:

Readers Are Already in Your Store

When blogging on Shopify, you don't have to worry about redirecting readers to an external blog. Shopify's blogging feature allows you to keep all of your content in one place, meaning readers can explore and purchase without leaving the store.

Shopify Blog Is Cohesive & Creates a Positive Impression

Having your visitors switch between your store and WordPress blog can be jarring and distracting. But with Shopify's blogging feature, you can create a seamless user experience that keeps customers engaged throughout the entire process, from browsing to shopping. This creates a positive impression of your brand and encourages customers to come back for more.

Easy to Manage

On Shopify, you just manage one admin tool, making it easier to keep track of your blog content. The more admin tools you have to deal with, the more time you'll spend on maintenance and updates. Also, Shopify's easy-to-use blogging interface allows you to add images, videos, and other content quickly and easily.

Ease of use is what gives Shopify an edge, even when we talk about Shopify vs. Squarespace SEO or WooCommerce SEO vs. Shopify SEO. The drag-and-drop design of Shopify makes it an ideal choice for beginners as well as experienced bloggers.

The only downside of migrating WordPress blog to Shopify is that moving multiple posts with multiple images, meta info, and more can become a bit complex. Imagine your 100+ blog posts, each with its own set of data. This is enough to through you off-track unless you plan and work methodically.

One of the most efficient ways to migrate your blog to Shopify is by getting the help of a professional. They can handle the migration process for you, ensuring that all of your posts, images, and other content are transferred over successfully.

A developer has all the tools, expertise, and know-how to ensure an error-free migration. Plus, they can help you make further customizations on the Shopify blog. This includes setting up redirects, ensuring meta info and image sizes are correct, and more.

Use a Third-Party App

You can use a third-party WordPress to Shopify migration app if you don't want to hire a developer. These apps will help you transfer all of your content from WordPress to Shopify quickly and easily.

One of the best apps to use is Matrixify. This app automatically imports all of your WordPress posts and images in minutes. It also allows you to customize post layouts, categories, meta info, and more.

Note: Matrixify has free and paid plans. Price can be adjusted depending on the data volume you need to import/export and your store size. This makes it a great option for those looking for an affordable way to migrate their WordPress blog over to Shopify.

Use The Built-in Importer Tool - Transporter

If you know a thing or two about coding and database structures, you can use Shopify's Transporter app to migrate your WordPress blog. This built-in importer tool enables you to transfer posts, images, and other content from your WordPress blog to Shopify.

It's worth noting that the Transporter tool only works for small data sets. This means that there may be better options for those with a large number of posts to migrate.

Also, this tool is only available for Shopify Plus Merchants. Other Shopify merchants will need to use either a developer or a third-party app.

As an experienced Shopify SEO professional, we recommend Matrixify over Transporter. The latter doesn't do a decent job when migrating data from platforms such as Magneto and WordPress. The former, on the other hand, is thorough and reliable.

How to Use Matrixify to Migrate WordPress Blog to Shopify

Below is a step-by-step guide on how to use Matrixify to migrate your WordPress blog to Shopify.

Step 1: Use the “All Export” Plugin To Export Pages & Posts on WordPress

To export posts and pages on WordPress, you need to install the “All Export” plugin.

Once installed, go to the “All Export” page and select "New Export" from the drop-down menu. Then, choose either Pages or Posts as the type of content you want to export and click "Customise Export File."

Customize Export File

This is where you choose the fields and data you want to export. You can select the "Add All" option to test the export. However, this may result in a corrupt CSV file because it exports too much data.

Below are some of our recommended fields you should select when customizing your export file:

For blog posts:

  • Standard: ID, permalink, date, title, excerpt, content.
  • Custom fields: Yoast SEO plugin fields such as yoastwpseo_metadesc, yoastwpseo_title, and yoastwpseo_focuskw.
  • Media/Images: alt text, featured image, and other images used.
  • Taxonomies: including categories, tags, and other taxonomies associated with the posts.
  • Other: Post modified date, the author's first and last name, slug, Password, etc.

For pages:

  • Standard: ID, permalink, date published, title, excerpt, and content.
  • Custom Fields: yoastwpseo_metadesc and yoastwpseo_title if you’re using the Yoast SEO plugin on WordPress.
  • Other: Password, the author's first and last name, post modified date.

Once you have selected the fields, you want to export, click "Confirm & Run Export."

Download The Exported File

Once you have marked the fields you want to export, click "Confirm & Run Export" and wait for the download link to be generated. Once ready, a page with a CSV button will pop-up. Click the button to download the exported file.

Never open the downloaded CSV file for editing. This is because when you use a third-party application such as Excel or Google Sheets, you may end up corrupting the file.

Step Two: Import the Exported CSV File to Matrixify

If you haven't installed Matrixify, you can do so from the Shopify App Store. To do this, go to the Shopify App Store and search for "Matrixify." Click the Install button to install the app.

Once installed, go to Matrixify and click the “Import” button. Then, select "From File" and upload the exported CSV file.

When you have uploaded the file, click “Next” to continue with the migration process. You can also map fields and adjust meta-data if necessary.

Step Three: Download Import Results

When Matrixify completes generating files, a green "Finished" badge will appear next to the "Import" button. Click the “Download Import Results” button to download the results.

Step Four: Upload Downloaded Images to Shopify Files

Extract the zip file on your computer. Then go to your Shopify admin>Settings>Files and upload the images from your extracted folder. Don't interrupt the upload process, as it may cause issues.
