Most Shopify and eCommerce stores approach link building the same way: check the Domain Rating (DR) or Domain Authority (DA), and if the number passes the pre-defined range, buy the link. It's the default approach today, and it's also the fastest way to burn an ecommerce SEO link-building budget without moving a single ranking.
However, today my goal with this article is to show you exactly how I go about building links, that not only drive results, but more importantly maximize my ROI (since many links these days don't even move the needle anymore).
My system comes from 9 years of Shopify-exclusive SEO work that's generated more than $100 million in additional organic revenue for clients, with $29.6 million of that in the last two years alone.
The 3 Mistakes Killing Most Shopify Link Building Budgets
Before any single tactic, three tactics do most of the damage, and they all stem from optimizing for the wrong signal.
1. Chasing DR and DA
Domain Rating and Domain Authority are the first (and often only) filter most stores apply. The problem: both are third-party scores, not Google metrics, and both can be bought outright. A $50–$100 Fiverr gig can push a domain's DR from 0 to 60 in a matter of days, which makes the metric close to meaningless as a quality signal on its own.
2. Ignoring page-level traffic
A link placed on a page that isn't indexed, or gets zero search traffic, passes almost no value no matter how authoritative the domain looks. If the specific page hosting your link isn't ranking for anything, Google hasn't extended it any trust to pass along.
3. Chasing mentions, not links
Getting featured in a "best-of" list or cited by an AI Overview feels like a win, and it can be. But if you're paying for the placement and there's no link back, you're financing free advertising for someone else's page. If you're already paying, there's no reason not to insist on the link too.
A single "quality" backlink now averages $361–$509 industry-wide, climbing past $800 in competitive verticals like legal and finance, and 64% of SEOs report spending at least $3,000/month on link acquisition.

Get A Free SEO & AI Growth StrategyWhat Is a Backlink, Really?
Think of every backlink as a vote. Some votes carry more weight than others, and the weight comes down to a handful of factors: how much traffic the linking page itself gets, how much trust the linking domain has built up, and, ultimately, how well your site covers the topic you're trying to rank for compared to everyone else competing for it. Google combines the power of every link you've earned with your topical coverage, and whoever has the most of both tends to dominate the keyword.
That's also why tools like Ahrefs and SEMrush default to sorting a site's backlinks by page traffic rather than domain score, it's the closest proxy available for how much power a given link is actually passing.
The #1 Google result carries roughly 3.8x more backlinks than positions 2–10 on average, and referring-domain count remains one of the strongest ranking-factor correlations researchers have measured, Backlinko's analysis of 11.8M results put it at r=0.38; Ahrefs' 2025 study of ~1M SERPs measured r=0.255. Backlinks are now estimated at roughly 13% of Google's overall ranking weight, down from over 50% historically, smaller than it used to be, but still the strongest external signal on the table.
Dofollow vs. Nofollow: The Difference Beginners Get Wrong
Not every link is built the same. A dofollow link is the site saying, "I trust this enough to pass along my own SEO power." A nofollow link (or one tagged sponsored or ugc) says, "I'll mention you, but I'm not vouching for you", it still carries some residual trust, but nowhere near the same weight. Nofollow links are fine to receive; they're just not worth actively building. The tactics worth your time below are, almost without exception, dofollow.

| Resource page link building | D | Medium | Low | Rarely lands on an indexed, ranking page |
| Podcast guesting | Bonus | Medium | None | Audience reach first, link play second |
S tier, build these first
Expert roundups & interviews
Journalists actively want expert opinions, especially in niches like home and garden. A sentence or two of commentary in an article that ranks is one of the best links available.
Brand partnerships & content swaps
Team up with non-competing brands serving the same audience, you write for their site, they write for yours, you both link, and it costs nothing but time.
Testimonial link building
Leave a genuine testimonial for a Shopify app or tool you use; homepage and reviews-page placements get real, ongoing traffic.
Link insertion & niche edits
Skip the wait for a new page to index, insert directly into a page that's already ranking.
Unlinked brand mention reclamation
If a site already mentions your brand without linking, ask, it's often a five-minute email for one of the strongest links you'll get all year.
A tier, strong, but takes work or carries some risk
Guest posting
Only when the post targets a real keyword and actually ranks; a guest post that never gets traffic belongs in D tier instead.
Digital PR & linkable assets
Original research, benchmarks, and industry reports can attract links with zero outreach, though compiling the data is genuinely time-consuming.
Expired domain acquisition
Picking up a relevant, lapsed domain and redirecting it to a relevant page is one of the fastest ways to inherit real link equity; it's undeniably grey-hat, but a low-risk one if you know what you're buying.
B tier, worth doing, lower priority
Lost backlink reclamation
Monitoring for links that quietly disappear (often from a client's migration or content refresh, not malice) and asking for them back.
Broken link building
Finding a relevant site's broken backlinks and 404s, recreating that resource, and pitching the fix. It worked better in 2018–2020; today the time-to-link ratio rarely justifies prioritizing it.
D tier, skip these
Guest posts with zero traffic
A guest post that never ranks or gets visitors passes almost no value, no matter how authoritative the site hosting it looks. None of these reliably move rankings anymore.
PBNs on internal pages
Private blog network links pointed at internal pages carry real risk and don't reliably move rankings anymore. Homepage PBN links are the one narrow exception, since homepages tend to retain some real traffic.
Automated link software
Tools like GSA or Money Robot spin up thousands of low-quality pages. None of it reliably moves rankings anymore.
Resource page link building
Getting listed on a generic resource page rarely lands you on a page that's actually indexed and ranking, which is exactly the trap from mistake #2 above.
Only 2.2% of published content ever earns links from more than one referring domain, the remaining 97.8% gets zero or one. It's exactly why the S-tier tactics above outperform "publish and hope": they don't wait for links to happen, they go get them.
Bonus: podcast guesting
It can be worthwhile purely for audience reach, but most podcast links land on a low-traffic "guests" page that Google rarely sends anyone to, so treat it as a relationship and exposure play first, a link play second.

Get A Free SEO & AI Growth StrategyThe One Metric That Beats DR Every Time
If there's a single takeaway to steal from this entire system, it's this: stop screening links by domain-level vanity metrics, and start checking whether the exact page you're getting placed on has real, current organic traffic. That one check, whether the page ranks for anything, tells you more about a link's value than DR, DA, or total domain traffic combined.
A Quick Note on AI Citations
AI Overviews and chatbot citations are genuinely useful, and one of the easiest ways to show up inside them is being featured on a "best XYZ" listicle. But the same rule from mistake #3 applies here too: if you're already paying for the placement, insist on the link. You'll get cited either way, but a linked mention is both more natural-looking and strictly more valuable than an unlinked one. There's no version of this where skipping the link helps you.
The Results
Applied consistently, this is what the system produces for real Shopify and e-commerce brands, see the full case studies for the exact numbers behind each one.
FAQ: Ecommerce SEO Link Building
How important are backlinks for ecommerce SEO?
Very. Referring-domain count is one of the strongest measured ranking-factor correlations in SEO, r=0.38 in Backlinko's 11.8M-result study, and the #1 Google result carries roughly 3.8x more backlinks than positions 2–10 on average. Backlinks are now estimated at roughly 13% of Google's overall ranking weight, down from over 50% historically, but still the strongest external signal available to an ecommerce store. The catch: only links to pages that are actually indexed and getting search traffic pass meaningful value, which is exactly why the DR-chasing habit above wastes so much budget.
What are the different types of backlinks for ecommerce SEO?
Technically, there are two: dofollow links, which pass SEO authority and are the only type worth actively building, and nofollow links (including those tagged sponsored or ugc), which are fine to receive but not worth chasing. Strategically, ecommerce backlinks break down into the 15 tactics ranked above, from S-tier plays like expert roundups, brand partnerships, testimonials, link insertions, and unlinked mention reclamation, down to D-tier tactics like PBNs and automated link software that no longer move rankings.
What are the easiest links to get for ecommerce SEO?
The S-tier tactics above: testimonial link building, unlinked brand mention reclamation, and link insertions into pages that are already ranking. None of them require waiting for new content to rank first. Leaving a genuine testimonial for a Shopify app or tool your store already uses converts into a real, ongoing-traffic link almost every time, and it's usually a five-minute task.
None of this requires exotic tactics. It requires ignoring the metrics that are easy to fake, prioritizing the one that isn't, and consistently working the S-tier list, partnerships, testimonials, insertions, reclamation, and expert commentary, instead of chasing the volume plays that stopped working years ago.
