You don't need to use a third-party sitemap generator to generate sitemaps on Shopify because the platform automatically generates them for you. This sitemap contains all the pages, products, collections, and blog posts on your Shopify store.

How to Find a Shopify Sitemap

To find your sitemap:

  • Log in to your Shopify admin panel
  • Click Online Store > Navigation
  • Under the "Sitemaps" heading, click Sitemaps

Your sitemap file is named sitemap.xml and is located in the root directory of your server. For example, if your shop's domain name is myshop.com, then your sitemap would be located at myshop.com/sitemap.xml

If you want to generate a sitemap for a specific section of your shop, you can use a filter to create a sitemap that contains only the pages, products, collections, or blog posts that you want. For example, if you only want to include products in your sitemap, you would use this filter: ?type=product.

How to Verify Shopify in Google Search Console

There are two ways to verify Shopify in Google Search Console as shown below:

  • Domain Name System (DNS) Verification: This method is recommended if you're using a custom domain. You can add a DNS record to your domain's DNS settings. When you add this record, Google can verify that you own or control the domain.
  • URL Prefix: This method is recommended if you use the .myshopify.com domain. You can add your shop's URL prefix to your Google Search Console account. For example, if your shop's URL is myshop.com, then you would add the URL prefix myshop.com/. When you add this prefix, Google can verify that you own or control the domain.

DNS verification is a complex process, which may require the input of a professional. If you're not comfortable verifying your domain using DNS, then we recommend that you use the URL prefix method. To do this:

  • Go to your Google Search Console account
  • Open Menu
  • Click the Add a Property button
  • Choose the URL Prefix as the Property Type
  • Enter your Conical URL in the format myshop.com/
  • Click Continue
  • Under Verification Methods, choose the HTML Tag option
  • Click Copy to clipboard

To copy the code to your store:

  • Log in to your Shopify admin panel
  • Click Online Store
  • Click Themes
  • Click Actions>Edit code
  • In the Layout folder, click theme.liquid to open the file in the online code editor
  • Paste your Google Site verification code after <head> and before <body>
  • Click Save

Go back to Google Search Console:

  • Click Verify
  • Your site will now be verified in Google Search Console!

You can now start using the features and tools in Google Search Console to optimize your Shopify store for Google search.

Note: You may need to repeat this process several times to claim all your URL prefixes, e.g HTTP/HTTPS, WWW/non-WWW, with and without trailing slash. etc.

How to Submit Your Sitemap to Google Search Console

Once you’ve verified your Shopify store in Google Search Console, it's time to submit your sitemap. This allows Google to crawl and index your shop so that it appears in search results.

To submit your sitemap:

  • Log in to your Google Search Console account
  • Click Sitemaps from the left sidebar
  • Enter sitemap.xml in the text box and click Submit
  • Your sitemap will now be submitted to Google Search Console!

You now need to verify that your sitemap has been successfully submitted. To do this:

  • Log in to your Google Search Console account
  • Click Sitemaps from the left sidebar
  • Under the "Sitemap" column, click on the sitemap you submitted (sitemap.xml)

You should see a "Success" message next to the sitemap. This means that your sitemap has been successfully submitted and verified.

And that's it! You have now successfully submitted your Shopify sitemap to Google Search Console.

How to Use Google Search Console for Better Insights

Now that you know how to submit your Shopify sitemap and verify Google Search Console, you can start using it to get better insights into your traffic and keywords.

Google Search Console has a Performance Dashboard that shows your website's performance on Google search.

Your Theme Changed

If you had a migration or changed your theme, you must re-add an HTML meta tag to your store's code. To do this, locate the theme.liquid file in your code, and add the following line of code to the bottom of the file:

{{ shop.metafields.google-site-verification.value }}

Replace "google-site-verification" with your own unique meta tag name.

You Verified the Wrong URL as Primary Property

If you accidentally verified the wrong URL as your primary property in Google Search Console, there’s an easy way to fix it. Simply add the correct URL as a new property, set it as primary, and then delete the incorrect URL.

If your HTML tag is placed in the wrong location in your theme.liquid file, it won’t be read by Google, and you won’t be able to verify your site. To fix this, simply move the HTML tag to the correct location in your liquid file, as outlined earlier in the article.
